CRISPR/Cas9 is a powerful technology. DNA cleavage can be repaired by non-homologous end joining at the ends or by homologous DNA directed repair, which can result in alterations (deletions, insertions or mutations) in the target locus of a particular organism, resulting in altered gene function. The Cas9 RNP complex can be introduced directly into the cell and act immediately upon entry into the cell without transcription and translation. The CRISPR/Cas9 system and its variants have been widely used for gene editing applications (knockout, knock-in, gene/down, genome purification and visualization) by matching gRNA sequences to different functional domains.
