Creative Biogene Provides Tools for Monkeypox Virus Detection and Research

On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the monkeypox (mpox) outbreak in parts of Africa constitutes a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" (PHEIC). This is the second time in two years that the WHO has declared a monkeypox outbreak a PHEIC event. PHEIC is the highest alert level under international health law. The WHO said that the monkeypox outbreak has the potential to spread further in Africa and to other continents. According to a report released by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from the beginning of this year to July 28, the number of new monkeypox cases in Africa has surged by 160% compared with the same period last year. So far, 34 African countries have reported the discovery of the disease or have been identified as "high-risk" countries.

What Are the Symptoms of Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a rare viral zoonosis, meaning it is a virus that spreads from animals to humans. The disease is caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus, which also includes the variola virus that causes smallpox. While monkeypox is not as severe as smallpox, it still poses a significant health risk. The initial symptoms of monkeypox are similar to those of the flu: fever, headache, muscle aches, and exhaustion.

As the disease progresses, patients may develop swollen lymph nodes. Within one to three days of the fever, a distinctive rash begins, usually starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body. The rash goes through several stages, initially appearing as macules and papules (flat, raised lesions), then progressing to vesicles (fluid-filled blisters), pustules (pus-filled blisters), and finally crusting and falling off. The rash can be very itchy and is often accompanied by other symptoms, such as back pain and extreme weakness. The illness usually lasts 2 to 4 weeks. While most people recover without treatment, severe cases can occur, especially in children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Therefore, early recognition of symptoms and prompt medical attention are crucial to managing and controlling the disease.

How Is Monkeypox Spread?

Monkeypox can be transmitted from person to person through close contact, including sexual intercourse, skin-to-skin contact, and close talking or breathing with an infected person. The virus enters the body through broken skin, respiratory tract, or eyes, nose, or mouth. It can also be transmitted through contact with contaminated objects such as bedding, clothing, and towels, or close contact with infected animals such as monkeys, rats, and squirrels.

During the 2022 global monkeypox outbreak, the virus was mainly spread through sexual contact. The current outbreak in Congo was caused by sexual contact and other forms of close contact. The virus has also been found in other high-risk groups, including young children.
